A few weeks ago I was offered an opportunity to participate in Canada Performs and accepted the challenge to present a livestream concert. I set the date for May 5th, my 30th birthday and national day of awareness for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. Prior to receiving the invite I was feeling the call to speak to domestic violence; the relation of violence to our women and violence to our land. The beat for this song and the lyrics came to me within a few hours total. I created the music on my phone and wrote the lyrics in my notes app after I had the beat completed (in the middle of the night while my kids were asleep). The song is called “Not Your Princess” and speaks to the violence we regularly face as Indigenous women while the hook empowers my sisters to find and use their voices.
I am fortunate to run my own production business and have invested in equipment and creating a studio space over the last few years. So filming and stage set up were no problem but interacting with only tiny words on a screen and Facebook reactions was another level of adjustment.
