Serge Bennathan

These are the Times… was created to summon our inner Giant, a metaphor for our own courage, our resilience, our re-invention, our inner voice. To act, to become, to move. To believe again in a nature that is beautiful, mysterious and a Spirit carrier.

With this work I want through poetry to touch the imagination of people, opening doors to hope and desires for a profound transformation. To show people that it is through care and love and admiration that it will happen. Simple words that are asking to be summoned through our Giants.

My own desire is to create murals in the city with paintings like this one.

These are The Times… was created with water and what stayed of ink and pigments on my table after the Lock Down.

My name is Serge Bennathan.

I am a choreographer, a painter and a writer. Since I was 6 years old, dance has been my life. My professional career started at age 18 when I joined Les Ballets de Marseille, France. Since then, I offer to dance all that I possess, physically and spiritually, and in return dance has been very generous with me. Because of dance, I believe in Spirit and because of dance I believe in Ghosts.

In my Tree of Life, dance is the trunk, thick and strong. The branches represent what I have discovered and what dance has introduced me to; it’s in and amongst these branches that I encountered painting.

Through my paintings, I am a storyteller trying to reflect a profound desire for poetry, the poetry of the human soul, its dreams, hopes, imagination and humour. I deeply believe in the healing potential of my paintings as they speak to our imagination and, through it, reconnect us with the beliefs of our beginnings.
