Leah Giberson
The mixed media paintings I was initially working on for this project no longer feels relevant in this time of sorrow, rage and upheaval in our country. The work "of the moment" that feels most urgent for me is not something I can put on a panel or in a frame at this time, but rather it's the essential work of sustained action for racial equality and justice.
Over the past couple weeks this work has involved listening, reading, marching, kneeling, standing with and showing up. There have also been long conversations with friends and family about racism, white privilege, policy changes, accountability and what it means to be a true “ally”. This work is not limited to this moment, but is a work-in-progress that must be committed from here on out.
In light of all this, I am not submitting one of my paintings, but instead want to share a photograph from the regenerative garden on my windowsill. With enough light, water and air, it's amazing what can flourish after the rotten parts have been cut away.
